5 Healthy Habits That Can Improve Your Daily Life

5 Healthy Habits That Can Improve Your Daily Life

Written by Victoria Parada - Behavioral Nutritionist and Undergraduate student in Psychology

Everyone's routine should be personal and adapted to their own lifestyle. As a nutritionist, I've always believed that there is no "one-size-fits-all" approach to healthy living. I would never create a meal plan filled with chia seeds for someone who had never even heard of them - that's what made my approach different. Good nutrition should be realistic, practical, and sustainable. That said, there are a few healthy habits that can benefit almost everyone.

1. Prepare a Packed Lunch

Bringing your own lunch doesn't just save money - it also helps you make healthier food choices and avoid relying on fast food or highly processed meals.

Meal prepping is especially helpful during busy weekdays, when work, family, and other responsibilities leave little time to think about what to eat.

2. Get Some Sunlight

Spending some time outdoors each day can support your overall well-being. Exposure to natural daylight helps regulate your body's internal clock (circadian rhythm), which plays an important role in sleep quality, energy levels, and mood.

Sunlight also helps your body produce vitamin D, although the amount varies depending on factors such as location, season, skin tone, and sunscreen use.

During the summer, take advantage of the longer days by spending a little time outside. Just remember to wear sunscreen and avoid excessive sun exposure or sunburn.

3. Prioritize Quality Sleep

Sleep is one of the most underrated pillars of health.

It's not just about getting eight hours of sleep - it's also about sleep quality. A consistent sleep routine supports hormone regulation, cognitive function, stress management, immune health, and overall well-being.

If possible, try to reduce screen time before bed. Instead, spend a few minutes writing down your thoughts, worries, or emotions in a journal. This simple habit may help your mind relax before sleep.

4. Fuel Your Body Before and After Exercise

Don't focus only on exercising more - focus on exercising consistently.

What you eat before and after a workout can influence your energy levels, recovery, and performance.

Before exercising, choose a meal or snack rich in complex carbohydrates, such as:

  • Banana with oats and plain low-fat yogurt
  • Baked potatoes or sweet potatoes with olive oil and herbs

After your workout, prioritize protein to support muscle recovery. Good options include:

  • Whey protein with coconut water, paired with a piece of fruit
  • Grilled chicken with mashed potatoes and a mixed salad

Remember that individual nutritional needs vary depending on your goals, health conditions, and the type of exercise you perform.

5. Eat Fewer Ultra-Processed Foods

Reducing your intake of ultra-processed foods helps support a healthier gut microbiota. When the gut microbiome becomes imbalanced (a condition known as dysbiosis), intestinal permeability may increase, allowing bacterial components such as lipopolysaccharides (LPS) from Gram-negative bacteria to enter the bloodstream.

This can trigger chronic low-grade inflammation, which has been associated with conditions such as acne, fatigue, metabolic disorders, and may contribute to hair loss in some individuals.

One of the first steps toward an anti-inflammatory lifestyle is reducing ultra-processed foods and prioritizing whole, nutrient-dense meals that nourish both your body and your gut microbiome.
