🇺🇸 - The Role of Processed Foods

Why do people talk a lot about processed foods? What is the role of processed foods? What should you know about it? Well, before you think I will be the first one to say it is very bad for your health, and that you shouldn't eat it, I will show you both sides of it.

As a holistic health coach, I believe we should live in balance. But that does not mean living under a tree and only eating apples after you meditated. If you enjoy this lifestyle, of course you can do it. However, I don't like depriving. Therefore, focusing on the quantity of the food you eat, will be very important. Eating that snack once in a week, it's better than eating every day. If you are watching a movie with your friends, or you are at a party, eating a snack can be very delicious. The problem is if it becomes a habit. And, especially, a daily habit.

According to Cambridge University, “Pro-inflammatory diet is associated with a high number of cardiovascular events and ultra-processed foods consumption in patients in secondary care,” based on their conclusion in one of their studies, “A more pro-inflammatory diet is associated with a greater chance of having 2 and ≥ 3 cardiovascular events and cardio metabolic risk factors and were more likely to consume processed, ultra-processed and culinary ingredients compared to those with a more anti-inflammatory diet.” What happens is that it not only affects these people, but also everybody else. A diet rich in processed foods, can increase the chances of diabetes, cardiovascular problems, obesity, cancer, and many other diseases.

The Role of Processed Foods In Our Society-

By 1920s, we have in history the beginning of alcohol and cigarettes in a fashionable way, as it was “beautiful.” However, during WWII women started little by little to work more than before, and help society to grow. Many women contributed to help their husbands during wartime. Thus, we were stopping to cook like before, and as time was passing, we understood we could do much more than just cooking and making our husbands happy. At this period, burgers are consumed, and TV is on while people have dinner.

As the world was growing and getting busy with wars, projects, the economy was changing, little by little people didn't have the time to cook like once their family used to. We stopped chasing after food, and nowadays, companies like Ifood, Uber Eats, etc, “bring food to out table.” (Despite the fact we forget about our lovely and strong producers who work really hard and never get credits they should earn.) The goal about processed foods is to make life “easier,” by not having to cook it and having time to complete daily tasks. But the problem is when we turn fast food into something bad, instead of thinking about one's health.

According to Time, “ We like junk food so much that 61% of the food Americans buy is highly processed, according to research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. And almost 1,000 calories a day of person's diet eats solely from highly processed foods.”

At the same time, fast food is helping many people do their tasks easily, isn't it making them die faster? Trying healthy fast snacks can be a good option if you have a busy life. Here are some examples.

Your inner self

Did you know that in Brazil, cigarettes' packs have image effects of the cigarette in one's body? Yes, it is true. In my humble opinion, I believe industry should do the same for our lovely snacks. At least, every time we would consume it, it would remind us of the effects it can cause in our body.

Would you give something harmful to someone you love? I do not think so. Therefore, take the same care you give others to yourself. Don't do to yourself what you wouldn't like to do with other people.

I am not here to judge, punish, or blame you for consuming processed foods. However, if you have the habit to consume it often, start focusing on whole and nutritious foods! And read this article as many times as you need.
